Linda Gilkeson

Sunday, March 11th, 2018 at Kildara Farms

A widely acclaimed speaker, Linda earned a PhD in Entomology from McGill University in 1986, subsequently moved to British Columbia where she has consulted and educated many in the areas of Integrated Pest Management and organic growing.

Her comprehensive gardening book Backyard Bounty: The Complete Guide to Year-Round Organic Gardening in the Pacific Northwest has become a BC best seller. We are will have the newly minted second edition available for purchase at her lectures, if it’s off the press in time. *For more info on this, please see bottom of page.

We are delighted to have Linda back this year, with all new topics to educate and entertain. Linda is very generous with her knowledge, and participants always leave happy and eager to get to the garden. Two-hour lectures allow time for questions from the audience.

The lectures will be held at Kildara Farms, not far from the nursery.

REGISTRATION: Attend one or both of the lectures; cost is $18.50 for one lecture, or $30 for both. Advance reservations are highly recommended, space is limited and Linda is a very popular speaker.
Payment may be made in person at Russell Nursery (no phone reservations please),
or on line here.

Did you know it can be too hot for tomatoes? Is your soil too acid for beets? This presentation reviews vegetable nutrient requirements, and how to moderate high and low temperatures that halt growth and contribute to common disorders such as bolting, blossom end rot, and button heads. Once you know how plants actually ‘work’ and how they respond to stress, you will be able to improve their growing conditions and reap greater yields.

Kildara is a family-run certified organic farm producing everything from poultry and eggs, fruits and vegetables, to cut flowers. Located in Deep Cove near the tip of the Saanich Peninsula, Kildara offers produce for sale at the farm as well as at Thrifty’s and many island and lower mainland markets. With sweeping ocean views, the rustically beautiful converted barn provides a picturesque location for weddings, and we are fortunate to have this gem in our community.

REVISED EDITION OF BACKYARD BOUNTY includes the latest information on how to grow vegetables and fruit in our Pacific coastal region. New material has been added on the impact of the changing climate and how to adapt gardening methods to accommodate the challenges of increasingly variable weather. Updates on crops and cultivars that are tolerant of heat and drought, as well as water conserving irrigation methods and simple crop protection tools such as shade cloth and tunnels are all new in this edition. Sections on soil fertility and the activity of soil micro-organisms have been expanded, with new entries on recently introduced pests and stress disorders of vegetable and fruit crops.
